Meet the Herd

Here you can find our current rescue horses.  If you wish to make a donation to the care of a specific horse, click the sponsor button by their name.

Lucky was born to Penny here on the farm in February 2023. We had suspicions that Penny may have been pregnant, but were unable to confirm since we were unable to handle Penny. Lucky is just an adorable, playful little girl who has never had a bad day in her life. She is completely un-phased by most everything (except when you take her mom out of the herd to work with her) and just absolutely loves life. She can be sassy at times, but the other horses quickly remind her of herd manners and etiquette.

Lucky

One year old filly

Hope

Aged shetland pony mare

Rescued from auction in October 2023.

This poor little girl has a condition called equine metabolic syndrome which has not been managed well for years. She has to be on a very strict diet and needs her feet trimmed every 2-3 weeks currently. Even though humans have let her down, she still whinnies the cutest whinny when she hears you coming.

Stanley

Young male donkey

Rescued October 2023 from auction. He had clearly never been handled and his feet had started to curl. He also had mud caked on to his legs up past his knees. He would stumble along just trying to stay out of the way of anything he thought may be a threat.

Imp

Senior mare

Imp is now in her late 20s and she is as sweet as they come!  Before Annie brought her home to come live with Winston, there was talk of putting her down as she is not an optimal school horse.  She has shown to be the best boss mare in the herd and she will stand all day long to be groomed and loved on.  Her favorite activities include hanging out with all of her boyfriends (especially Moe), grazing, and keeping the herd in line by being a very fair boss mare.  If you would like to sponsor Imp, click the link by her name!

Penny

3 year old grade filly

This past September Penny came home to LSO after a long journey from a Texas kill pen!  She is adjusting to life in the rolling hills of Vermont, eating, making friends and learning to trust humans.  She is an absolute doll who is learning that all humans are not threatening.  And she loves peppermints!

Moe (Alamo)

14 year old QH (not a rescue)

This is Alamo!  Moe or "Moe Moe" for short.  he is a gorgeous buckskin, quarterhorse gelding.  We are working on teaching him that humans don't have to be scary and he is allowed to be relaxed under saddle.  He has the best ground manners ever and he is a beautiful mover under saddle.  We are just working on learning that you don't have to buck in the canter :)  Moe's favorite activities include grazing with his girlfriend Imp, pretending he is the boss of the heard, and munching on cookies.  Moe is currently living his best life with Annie's long time friend, Lisa in Massachusetts.

Theo, AKA Tj

Not a rescue, just a project!

This guy is one of LSO's fan favorites!  He is the biggest goofball with such a sweet personality.  His favorite activities include eating peppermints (top of the list by far), escaping and roaming the neighborhood, and going out on the trails.  He has come a long way since he came home to LSO in 2019 and we are working towards showing lower level dressage!

Ella

Young mini mule

Rescued from auction in April 2024. When we got her, her halter had started to become embedded into her poor little face (probably because it has been on for months or even years) and she looked as if she had never had her feet done before. Even having been neglected, she is the absolute sweetest little girl. Acts more like a puppy dog than a mule. Love attention and scratches.

Dylan

I mean just look at this little guys' adorable face.  Dylan has been with LSO since August 2022.  He was previously a lesson horse and one of Annie's school favorites.  When he was no longer able to be a lesson horse (lameness issues on a circle) he came to retire at LSO.  Don't let that fool you though!  He is an absolute blast out of the ring and LOVES the trails!  He is a great sure-footed, safe under saddle husband horse.

20 year old "American warmblood"

Minnie

20 something year old Belgian mare

Rescued from auction in April of 2024. She previously was an Amish workhorse who became too old to continue working. She ended up at auction, emaciated, depressed, covered in scars and shutdown. She is slowly learning to trust humans and that maybe we’re all not so bad. She’s coming out of her shell and actually starting to seek affection from us. Minnie will live out her days here on the farm.

Former LSO Residents

Horses no longer with us who were laid to rest here at LSO.

Bear

Senior gelding

Bear is no longer with us but here was his bio...

Bear is a mid to late 20 something year old Percheron cross.  He is as SWEET as they come!  He loves breakfast and dinner time and will whinny when he sees you coming!  He had previously been a camp horse for many years loyally toting kids around with a steady Eddie personality.  He is now living his best retired life here at LSO and this is where he will live out his days.  Some of his favorite activities include napping out in the field, free roaming around the neighborhood and eating.  This big guy eats A LOT!

Winston

No longer with us, but LSO's first resident

Winston was Annie's first horse.  Her buddy.  He went everywhere with her.  To and from college each year, to pharmacy school and finally up to Vermont where he was laid to rest out in his pasture.

Ginger

Aged mare

Ginger was rescued at auction in October of 2023.  She was severely emaciated and her feet had clearly been neglected for some time.  Unfortunately she was not with us very long as she coliced in January of 2024 and we lost her.  Ginger was vibrant, sweet, loved other horses, and was just a really love-able horse.  We feel terrible that humans had failed her in the past but had some peace knowing that we were able to give her a few months of the care she deserved.
