Lucky

Two year old filly

Lucky was born to Penny here on the farm in February 2023. We had suspicions that Penny may have been pregnant, but were unable to confirm since we were unable to handle Penny. Lucky is just an adorable, playful little girl who has never had a bad day in her life. She is completely un-phased by most everything (except when you take her mom out of the herd to work with her) and just absolutely loves life. She can be sassy at times, but the other horses quickly remind her of herd manners and etiquette.

Maple

2 year old pony mule

Maple was rescued from auction in August of 2024 with King and Eloise.  He is the cutest little pint sized guy who is still learning to trust humans.  He is very very curious though!  With time he will come around but we think he's still in his decompressing phase.  He was really terrified at auction and clearly traumatized.  Stay tuned for Maple updates!

Stanley (Stan man)

Young male donkey

Rescued October 2023 from auction. He had clearly never been handled and his feet had started to curl. He also had mud caked on to his legs up past his knees. He would stumble along just trying to stay out of the way of anything he thought may be a threat.

Imp

Senior mare

Imp is now in her late 20s and she is as sweet as they come!  Before Annie brought her home to come live with Winston, there was talk of putting her down as she is not an optimal school horse.  She has shown to be the best boss mare in the herd and she will stand all day long to be groomed and loved on.  Her favorite activities include hanging out with all of her boyfriends (especially Moe), grazing, and keeping the herd in line by being a very fair boss mare.  If you would like to sponsor Imp, click the link by her name!

Penny

6 Year old mare

Penny was rescued from a kill pen in Texas in September of 2022.  We were her last hope, she was to be shipped to Mexico on a Monday, we saved her the Sunday before.  When Penny first arrived at LSO, she was completely feral and unhandled.  She did not trust humans and wanted absolutely nothing to do with us.  So it was a surprise to us in February 2023 when she foaled a lovely, healthy little filly!  And that's where Lucky girl came from.  Fast forward to today, we have earned Penny's trust.  She has been started under saddle and is learning so quickly!

Moe (Alamo)

14 year old QH (not a rescue)

This is Alamo!  Moe or "Moe Moe" for short.  he is a gorgeous buckskin, quarterhorse gelding.  We are working on teaching him that humans don't have to be scary and he is allowed to be relaxed under saddle.  He has the best ground manners ever and he is a beautiful mover under saddle.  We are just working on learning that you don't have to buck in the canter :)  Moe's favorite activities include grazing with his girlfriend Imp, pretending he is the boss of the herd, and munching on cookies.  Moe is currently living his best life with Annie's long time friend, Lisa in Massachusetts.

Theo (Tj)

Not a rescue, Annie's personal horse
11 year old appendix

This guy is one of LSO's fan favorites!  He is the biggest goofball with such a sweet personality.  His favorite activities include eating peppermints (top of the list by far), escaping and roaming the neighborhood, and going out on the trails.  He has come a long way since he came home to LSO in 2019 and we are working towards showing lower level dressage!

Eloise

5 year old female donkey

Eloise was rescued from auction in August 2024 along with King and Maple.   Eloise may just be the SWEETEST donkey ever!  She loves attention, treats and hugs.  We're unsure of her history but when we found her at auction she was underweight and needed her little feet done, but she definitely holds no grudge against humans for her past.

King

19 year old thoroughbred

Rescued at auction in Pennsylvania with Eloise and Maple in August 2024. King has a lip tattoo and because of this we were able to find out a little bit about his history.  He was born into the racing industry and when (I assume) they discovered he wasn't going to be a winner, they sold him.  Before King ended up with us, he was bought by a horse trader from a camp.  At auction King was completely shut down, emaciated and depressed.  It was heartbreaking how he just stood there so politely tied to the wall.  We know at that moment that he would be coming home with us.  In the past few months, King has blossomed.  His goofy, sweet personality is shining through and he is just an absolute love to be around.   His current favorite activities include spending time with his donkeys, eating German muffins and licking any person who gets close to him.

Duke

Thanks to all of our supporters, we were just able to rescue this big guy from a kill pen in PA!  He is a branded standardbred who was born in Orwell, VT.  He is 22 years old and was dumped when he was no longer useful to his previous owners. He is currently in quarantine in PA and will come to LSO in early March.  We cannot wait to spoil this guy and show him so much love and kindness!

22 y/o Standardbred

Ella

2 y/o mini mule

Rescued from auction in April 2024. When we got her, her halter had started to become embedded into her poor little face (probably because it has been on for months or even years) and she looked as if she had never had her feet done before. Even having been neglected, she is the absolute sweetest little girl. Acts more like a puppy dog than a mule. Love attention and scratches.

Dylan (Dilly bean)

I mean just look at this little guys' adorable face.  Dylan has been with LSO since August 2022.  He was previously a lesson horse and one of Annie's school favorites.  When he was no longer able to be a lesson horse (lameness issues on a circle) he came to retire at LSO.  Don't let that fool you though!  He is an absolute blast out of the ring and LOVES the trails!  He is a great sure-footed, safe under saddle husband horse.

22 year old "American warmblood"

Minnie

20 something year old Belgian mare

Rescued from auction in April of 2024. She previously was an Amish workhorse who became too old to continue working. She ended up at auction, emaciated, depressed, covered in scars and shutdown. She is slowly learning to trust humans and that maybe we’re all not so bad. She’s coming out of her shell and actually starting to seek affection from us. Minnie will live out her days here on the farm.

Former LSO Residents

Horses no longer with us who were laid to rest here at LSO.

Bear

Senior gelding

Bear is no longer with us but here was his bio...

Bear was in his mid to late 20s when he came to LSO and was as SWEET as they come!  He loves breakfast and dinner time and will whinny when he sees you coming!  He had previously been a camp horse for many years loyally toting kids around with a steady Eddie personality.  He is now living his best retired life here at LSO and this is where he will live out his days.  Some of his favorite activities include napping out in the field, free roaming around the neighborhood and eating.  This big guy eats A LOT!

Winston

LSO's first resident

Winston was Annie's first horse.  Her buddy.  He went everywhere with her.  To and from college each year, to pharmacy school and finally up to Vermont where he was laid to rest out in his pasture.

Winston was initially purchased at auction in MA around 2007.  We didn't know his history at the time, but we quickly found out he had trouble staying sound (which was most likely the reason he ended up at auction).  Radiographs and nerve blocking confirmed he had navicular syndrome and we tried to manage his condition as best we could throughout his life with us.  When his body was too tired and ready to go, he let us know and was laid to rest at LSO.

Ginger

Aged mare

Ginger was rescued at auction in October of 2023.  She was severely emaciated and her feet had clearly been neglected for some time.  Unfortunately she was not with us very long as she coliced in January of 2024 and we lost her.  Ginger was vibrant, sweet, loved other horses, and was just a really love-able horse.  We feel terrible that humans had failed her in the past but had some peace knowing that we were able to give her a few months of the care she deserved.

Hope

Aged shetland pony mare

Rescued from auction in October 2023 along with Stanley and Ginger.

This poor little girl had a condition called equine metabolic syndrome which had not been managed well for years.  Hope had been extremely neglected for too long and although we tried everything we could to rehab her, unfortunately we were not able to reverse the damage that had been done.  Hope was laid to rest and is no longer in pain.

Prince came to LSO in September of 2024.  He spent a good portion of his life as a lesson horse and when his body and mind were no longer able to keep up with the demands of being a lesson horse, he came to retire here at LSO.   Unfortunately our time with Princey was limited as he had a tragic accident that led to his passing.  The herd clearly misses him and he holds a special part in our hearts.
